“So,” Chanyeol says when they’re back in the hotel room after one more day of being tourists and walking around too much. “What’s the agenda for tonight?”
Baekhyun watches how the other flops down on the bed and looks over at him, grinning a little. Baekhyun grins back since, for once, he’s actually got real plans for them. He just hopes Chanyeol will like it.
“Actually, tonight we have a dinner reservation for this very fancy and recognized local restaurant,” he says slowly and studies Chanyeol’s reaction. The other lifts himself on his elbows and raises his brows at Baekhyun.
“Dinner reservation? Is that like... a date?”
Baekhyun shrugs and feels his face heat up a bit. Damn it. “If you want to call it that.”
He watches how a wide warm smile spreads on Chanyeol’s face. “Of course I do.”
Chanyeol gets up from the bed and walks over to Baekhyun, still smiling sweetly, and Baekhyun lets himself relax. Chanyeol gently strokes his hands up and down Baekhyun arms, pulling him closer.
“That’s so sweet of you,” he murmurs.
Baekhyun shrugs and tries to control his expressions even though he does feel super happy and sappy, even. “We have never actually gone to a proper date, so… Why not now when there’s finally a chance?”
Chanyeol chuckles and leans in to lightly peck Baekhyun’s lips. “Good point. So take me for a date, Mr. Romantic. Should I dress more nicely for the occasion?”
“Yes please! No hoodies or caps this time.”
“I’ll do my best.”
The restaurant is fancy. Like, really fancy. Baekhyun has expected something fine by the internet reviews he’s read but the reality with crystal chandeliers, 20-page wine selection and waiters who were better dressed than either of them is something else completely. The way Chanyeol is shyly glancing around and blinking across him suggests that he also os a bit overwhelmed by it all.
Baekhyun slids his hand across the table, lightly brushing his fingers against Chanyeol’s and offering him a small smile when Chanyeol meets his gaze.
“Sorry, I didn’t think it would be this fancy,” he says lowly. “Let’s imagine we’re richer and more elegant than we actually are.”
Chanyeol snorts and nods, stroking his thumb over Baekhyun’s fingers before pulling away when he notices the waiter approaching. Baekhyun eyes the wine list with worry and borderline fright. He knows nothing about wines so he just hastily orders two glasses of the first one on the list.
“I hope the food is good at least,” he says after the waiter leaves.
The food is good, mostly, but in a high-end place like that the quality and presentation unfortunately overrides the quantity. Small, delicate and beautiful portions that are gone after two bites. They order more wine that turns out to be too bitter for both of them. They snicker at each other’s wincing. Baekhyun wants to laugh out loud and joke around, but he doesn’t dare when the atmosphere is so quiet and classy. He wants to sit closer to Chanyeol, to hold his hand and share the food. He doesn't know what he was thinking when picking a place a like this.
Before the fourth course is served, Baekhyun leans closer to Chanyeol over the table.
“Let’s get out of here, now.”
Chanyeol blinks at him. “What? But we’re not finished–“
“Do you want to finish? Do you really like it here? Be honest.”
“Uh, well...” the elusive start is all Baekhyun needs to hear. He quickly fishes a couple of big bills from his wallet and places them on the table. Then, he grabs Chanyeol’s hand and leads them out of the restaurant, smiling charmingly at the puzzled looking waiters they pass along the way.
Once out, Baekhyun drags Chanyeol over the corner and one block down before he finally stops and lets himself laugh freely.
“That was kind of a bad idea,” he admits, chuckling. “I’m sorry. What a failure of a first date.”
Luckily, Chanyeol laughs as well. “Well, the night’s still young. Why don’t we continue somewhere else?”
Grinning, Chanyeol points somewhere across the road. Baekhyun turns and spots a hamburger chain restaurant. He snorts.
“Are you serious?”
“I’m still hungry after all that fancy stuff, aren’t you?”
“So,” Chanyeol smiles, ever so charming, guiding Baekhyun with a hand on the small of his back towards a nearby zebra crossing, “let me treat you another gourmet meal, mister.”
They end up sitting at a far end corner table, eating cheeseburgers and drinking coke, and it’s so ordinary and far from the earlier elegance – and Baekhyun really likes it. The table’s so tiny they can sit with their legs tangled and feed fries to each other while talking and joking. After they’re done with the food, Baekhyun goes and gets them ice cream for dessert and they sit and talk some more. It’s so carefree, so familiar, so perfect. This is the kind of date he had in mind. If he’d just realized he never needed a fancy restaurant for it.
Baekhyun stretches his hand under the table and places it on Chanyeol’s knee, stroking his thumb over the fabric.
“I hope the date was fun even though my planning failed big time,” he says.
“Of course it was,” Chanyeol assures. “It was an adventure. Now we know those kind of fancy places just aren’t for us.”
“But now,” the other continues and wiggles his eyebrows. “Since the date’s over, can I take you home?”
