'Sacrifice is the highest form of love,' goes a saying Seokjin has heard from at least three different people. The greatest, most glaring manifestation of love is sacrifice. It's what distinguishes a hobby from a passion, something someone is good at from something that someone has had to work hard for to perfect. It's what gets a lot of people in trouble, and what gets some out of them because they know their craft so well, anyone can dump shit on them and they'll still be able to find their way to the finish line on the dot. And it's the same 'code' superheroes live by everytime they set out to battle — they set aside their personal lives so they can save ten thousand others, even if it means having to give up a limb or two.
Seokjin stares at the building burning right in front of him and takes a deep, shaky breath. He knows the reason why the headquarters was build near the Office of the President was so supers like him could defend some of the most important people in the country, but, I wasn't expecting this, whispers a voice in his head. Explosions are normal, but this—
Where there was once a garden to welcome guests with now lies a thicket of smoke slowly thinning. Where there was once a building that stood tall and proud against the skyline now lies an expanse of space covered with ash and debris. Where people would usually look up and marvel at the tallest building in the city — Kim Corporation — now stands Joonmyun with his shoulders slumped forward and his eyes barricaded, empty, and for a very good reason. The building, the organization — Joonmyun worked hard to build everything from scratch. It took him ten, twenty years to solidify the foundation of the training center disguised as an up and coming electronics company; take out the ruins now, traces of the attack that was, and it's as if Kim Corp never existed.
Take the hope away from the heart of the city and everything turns bleak.
"I got the last of the guard dogs out. They need some medical attention, but they'll live," comes Yoongi's voice from behind, breathy and worn out. Seokjin looks over his shoulder, then, away from the destruction in front of him, and thins his lips when he sees the same image in Yoongi's eyes. "They have to. There's nothing else they can do but that."
