The problem with being a prince was that there were many obligations and necessities to be taken care of. Such as court meetings, king’s audience, formal dinners, state council meetings, meetings, meetings… These kinds of obligations were usually long-winded, dull and stiff and Baekhyun hated them with passion. He would’ve done anything to be able to skip even portion of those but his father demanded that his every son was present and “learned how one runs a country”. Baekhyun always wanted to roll his eyes at that; he was the fifth son, so only the fifth in the line of succession, meaning that it was highly unlikely for him to ever run a country. (Thankfully.) He would’ve much rather spent his mornings and afternoons playing games or learning fencing or riding a horse around the royal lands or even studying, good heavens.
But on that very afternoon, like on many others, he was stuck sitting at a state council meeting that had already lasted for three hours and would probably last yet another three. But, on that meeting, Baekhyun had noticed, official Park was present again after a while, and Baekhyun felt his stomach twist at the thought of what it meant…
And sure enough, after another hour of boredom and serious attempts in staying awake, Baekhyun felt a light tap on his shoulder and saw Jongdae, a royal advisor and Baekhyun’s friend of sorts, by his side. Jongdae handed him a small scroll of paper and after bowing retreated away quietly. Baekhyun glanced around warily but no one in the room paid him any attention, so he hastily opened the scroll under the table and tried reading it discreetly.
Meet me by the small pavilion at midnight, read in neat and familiar handwriting, and Baekhyun had to bite his lip to suppress a smile.
For the rest of the day, there was a tight knot of nervousness in Baekhyun's stomach, and he could barely concentrate on anything. When the rest of the palace was getting ready to sleep, Baekhyun sat by the window in his room, wide awake, and waiting for the right moment to sneak out and past the guards. He had done that countless times already but it all still made his heart hammer in his chest.
When it was time, he jumped out and as silent and quick as a shadow, hurried past the palace buildings and through the garden. The small pavilion stood by a pond at the farthest corner of the garden, and when Baekhyun sneaked closer, he could see a person sitting in the pavilion, resting their back against one of the pillars.
Baekhyun's stomach jumped at the sight of the other and he hurried his last steps. Chanyeol heard him coming and turned to him with a smile on his face.
Baekhyun walked straight into his arms and kissed him long and good. It had been weeks since he'd last seen Chanyeol. His father was a state official but their family lived outside the capital, so Chanyeol's visits were few and far between.
"Today was awful," Baekhyun sighed when they finally pulled apart.
Chanyeol chuckled. "I heard you had quite a lengthy meeting."
Baekhyun grunted and leaned his head against Chanyeol's shoulder. Chanyeol was just the right height for that.
"I don't want to be a prince. Can't we just run away together and leave this royal crap behind?" Baekhyun asked. He wasn't completely serious but he did toy with the thought every now and then. The palace was his home but it also felt like a prison sometimes.
"I'm afraid that's not possible," Chanyeol said, sounding apologetic. "But," he the continued so emphatically it made Baekhyun look up at him, "I have some good news for you. Something that would maybe make the 'royal crap' more bearable."
"Father wants me to stay in the palace for now. He wants me to take the exams to become a state official one day, and he thinks studying here is more effective."
Chanyeol smiled widely at Baekhyun's dumbfounded expression.
"Are you serious?"
It was almost the second best thing after running away together.
"Your Highness will have to bear me more often now," Chanyeol smirked, and Baekhyun could only laugh and pull him down for another kiss. And yet another. A god somewhere had heard his prayers.
listea you're up~!
